Moving Dialogue: A Bucharest/New York Dance Exchange >> 17th to 26th May

Moving Dialogue: A Bucharest/New York Dance Exchange is a creative, cultural exchange fostering engagement and interaction between both emerging and established contemporary American and Romanian dance artists.
Moving Dialogue is initiated and organised by Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, National Dance Center Bucharest, Gabriela Tudor Foundation, Movement Research and Dance Theater Workshop.
Moving Dialogue Romania is made possible with the financial support of the Romanian Cultural Institute and, in part, of the Trust for Mutual Understanding.
The presentations and debates in Romania will be hosted by Atelierul de Producţie (Bucharest) and by Fabrica de Pensule (Cluj).
Moving Dialogue is dedicated to Gabriela Tudor.

The first phase of the project, which took place in New York in October 2010, involved the following choreographers: Vava Ştefănescu, Mădălina Dan, Mihaela Dancs, Paul Dunca (Romania) and Maggie Bennett, Jillian Peña, HeJin Jang, Jon Kinzel (USA), dance critics Gina Şerbănescu (Romania), Cristiane Bouger and Anna Drozdowski (USA) and Cosmin Manolescu and Levi Gonzales as facilitators.
The schedule included working sessions, improvisations, round tables, meetings with other artists and informal performances hosted by Judson Church and Dance Theater Workshop, PS 122, Chocolate Factory, Danspace.

The second phase of the program took place in January 2011 in New York, where the dancers/choreographers Ana Cătălina Gubandru and Valentina de Piante received the MELT Intensive scholarship, organized each year by Movement Research, New York.

The last phase of the Moving Dialogue program takes place in Bucharest (Atelierul de Producţie) and Cluj-Napoca (Fabrica de Pensule) between 15 – 29th of May and includes meetings, discussions and informal showings. In this last phase of the program, the following choreographers are taking part: HeJin Jang, Jillian Peña, Levi Gonzalez, Cristiane Bouger (USA) and Mădălina Dan, Mihaela Dancs, Paul Dunca, Cosmin Manolescu (Romania), and the dance critics Anna Drozdowski (USA), Gina Şerbănescu and Mihaela Michailov (Romania).

This last phase is initiated and organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, National Dance Center Bucharest, Gabriela Tudor Foundation, Movement Research and Dance Theater Workshop, and is dedicated to Gabriela Tudor.

Whether the artistic experience shared by the artists involved in Moving Dialogue was directly connected to the way in which New York living feeds and influences creation, or it was about expressing oneself in a given artistic context, a tendency towards sharing was visible among Romanian and American artists: a search for a way to convey to the others a personal experience. Therefore, it became clear that, where there are differences in style and cultural background, there is always a strong possibility of sharing experiences and enriching the others, by developing a methodology of finding meeting points.” - Gina Şerbănescu, dance critic
